Over the last several months we’ve seen unprecedented changes to our world, economy and lives, as a result of COVID-19. For many people this has meant interruptions to their employment and school, resulting in a loss of income or potential income.
In March 2020 we released a $500,000 scholarship fund. With this, we helped more than 150 students access our programs. This is why we’ve released an additional $500,000 in scholarship funding, bringing our total contribution to $1M
These scholarships will offer partial tuition coverage, and are intended to help recipients develop skills that will allow them to launch new careers and get back to work during these unsettling times.
Part-time course Scholarships
Scholarships of $750 are available towards any of our part-time courses. Simply submit a short written essay explaining how COVID-19 has impacted your employment or studies as you register for the course. Scholarship submissions for part-time courses are evaluated and awarded on a weekly basis, however note that you must apply for the scholarship at least one week before the program starts in order to qualify.
Full-time Bootcamp Scholarships
Scholarships are available in the amount of $3,000 towards our Data Science and Web Development bootcamps. You should apply for a scholarship during your application process by submitting a written essay explaining how you’ve been financially impacted by COVID-19.
Scholarship submissions for full time programs are evaluated on a first-come, first-serve basis and are evaluated by our scholarship committee as students are accepted into the program. The deadline to apply for a full time scholarship is one month before the start of your program (the exact scholarship deadline date will be displayed on the submission page based on the program date for which you’ve applied). In order to be considered for a full time scholarship, you must have met the following criteria by your cohort scholarship deadline:
Please note that the admissions process takes 1-2 weeks to complete, please apply at least 2 weeks before the scholarship deadline to allow enough time to complete the criteria. Scholarship deadlines will be removed from this page when the funds have been distributed.
You’ll be notified if you are a scholarship recipient within one week of your acceptance to bootcamp, and you will then have two weeks to pay your deposit to confirm your seat and the scholarship. While our goal is to help as many people as we can, this scholarship, unfortunately, is not guaranteed. We understand there is a large financial implication to taking bootcamp, and not getting the scholarship may be an impediment to your learning. We are happy to help discuss financial options (see our financing guide), and will refund your deposit if you are unable to attend bootcamp.
Empowering our students with the skills they need to launch new careers is what we do at Lighthouse. In these unprecedented times, we hope that this scholarship fund will allow us to bring new career opportunities to those who need it most.

After COVID-19 forced me home from abroad, I decided to turn my coding hobby into a new career. It was not an easy decision, but I have no regrets and am so happy I decided to dive head first and commit to this career change.
Through a variety of financial assistance programs, both internally and through government avenues, we have summarized the options for you.
How are recipients selected?
Scholarship recipients are chosen by a selection committee, who review applicant essays independently and collate their findings to decide on successful recipients. This rotating committee is made up of staff members from across Lighthouse Labs who are passionate about education, representation, and mentorship.
Our scholarships are merit-based, and recipients are evaluated based on their work ethic, academic record, and likelihood to succeed in the rigorous bootcamp program.
What if I cannot attend bootcamp without a scholarship?
Lighthouse Labs recognizes that bootcamp is a big financial commitment and we encourage you check out this round-up of options to finance your bootcamp or this FAQ post about financing. The scholarships are not set up to be grants or bursaries and are awarded based on merit and social championing as opposed to financial need.
How do we identify which groups we work with?
Lighthouse Labs recognizes that “underrepresented” is difficult to define. We approach partnerships with curiosity, and with a goal of learning more about these underserved communities and how to best provide opportunities to them.
Lighthouse Labs is open to partnering with companies and organizations with a genuine interest in reducing barriers for underrepresented groups in technology in Canada.
How are Flex Scholarship recipients selected?
Our scholarship committee reads through the applications thoroughly in order to decide whether a student is eligible. Scholarships are awarded on a first come, first served basis so we recommend applying early, as funding is limited. Your scholarship essay will only be considered once you have submitted your essay and been accepted into the program. No deposit is required before you know your scholarship eligibility.
What is the essay question?
We share the essay questions with you once you’ve initiated the scholarship application process. They are short essay responses, designed to help you share your thoughts around representation, mentorship, and professional development.
How early should I apply for a scholarship?
As soon as possible! When you submit your bootcamp application, you’ll automatically receive a personal scholarship application link via email so you can get started on your essay questions straight away. Scholarship recipients are notified 3 weeks before the start of bootcamp.
