COVID-19 Information

In general, the admission process takes these 3 steps:

1. Apply online: Complete our online application, where you'll introduce yourself and give us an overview of your background. This includes your education, coding experience, plus your superpower (you know, the important details that will help us get to know you).

2. Interview: Once we receive your application, we’ll look over your experience, education, and work background. Our team will get in touch (quickly!) and will invite you for an online tech interview.

3. Prep Modules: The 70 hours you’ll spend on the Prep Modules will introduce the basic technologies you’ll use throughout bootcamp. You’re required to complete the Prep Modules in the weeks leading up to your first day of the program.

The fee for the bootcamp can be paid in two parts, both of which are due before the program begins. To reserve a spot in the program, a deposit is required. This step occurs once you go through the admissions process 6-10 weeks ahead of the start of the listed date of bootcamp, and pending approval into the program. Then, two weeks before the bootcamp begins, the remaining balance of the tuition is due.

The Public Health Agency of Canada is recommending that travellers avoid all non-essential travel outside of Canada. To limit the spread of COVID-19, many countries have put in place travel or border restrictions and other measures such as movement restrictions and quarantines. Additionally, Canada has temporarily closed its borders to non-citizens because of the coronavirus pandemic. Please visit Government of Canada - Travel Advice and Advisories for more information.

If you are still considering travelling or are already outside of Canada:

• Check your destination’s Safety and security, Entry/exit requirements and Health sections.
• Get the Government of Canada’s latest updates on COVID-19.
• Check the Pandemic COVID-19 travel health notice.
• Find out what commercial options are still available to return to Canada. Consider returning to Canada earlier than planned if these options are becoming more limited.
• Ensure that you have sufficient finances and necessities, including medication, in case your travels are disrupted.
• Check with your travel insurance provider to know more about their policies related to COVID-19. Find out if you are covered for medical treatment if you become infected with COVID-19 as well as for extended stays outside of Canada.

Upon return to Canada:

• Self-isolate for 14 days after your return from travel outside of Canada. Some provinces and territories may have specific recommendations for certain groups such as health care workers.
• Monitor your health for fever, cough or difficulty breathing.
• Wash your hands often for 20 seconds and cover your mouth and nose with your arm when coughing or sneezing.

If you develop a fever, cough or difficulty breathing within 14 days:

• Continue to isolate yourself from others
• Immediately call a health care professional or public health authority and:
  • describe your symptoms and travel history
  • follow their instructions carefully

Those who are infected with COVID-19 may have little to no symptoms. You may not know you have symptoms of COVID-19 because they are similar to a cold or flu. Symptoms may take up to 14 days to appear after exposure to COVID-19. This is the longest known infectious period for this disease. We are currently investigating if the virus can be transmitted to others if someone is not showing symptoms. While experts believe that it is possible, it is considered to be rare. Symptoms have included:

• fever
• cough
• difficulty breathing
• pneumonia in both lungs

Practice proper hygiene and spatial distancing.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
• Cough or sneeze into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand
• Dispose of any tissues you have used as soon as possible in a lined wastebasket and wash your hands afterwards
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands
• Clean high-touch surfaces (such as phones, computers, door handles, etc.) frequently with regular household cleaners or diluted bleach (1 part bleach to 9 parts water)
• Social distancing is a strategy where you try to avoid crowded places, large gatherings of people or close contact with a group of people. A distance of one to two metres (3 to 6 feet) will slow the spread of a disease, but more distance is more effective.
• Remember we have technology to keep in touch with one another. Slack, Google hangouts, and Facetime are just a few resources we can use during this time. Also, it's easier to not ask for help when there are less familiar technologies involved, but it's important to not shy away! Reach out and try to be patient with working out the technology kinks over the next little bit.

Tips from our alumni and LHL web developer - Karl:

Working from home and keeping focused is mostly about mindset. Here are some tips to get you into that mindset in the morning, and keep you there until you are done with your day.

Routines are everything:

If you have a routine you follow when you get up to go to work, do it when you’re working at home as well. Get up at a normal work time, have a shower, get ready, wear the clothes you would if you were going into the office etc.

Pick a workspace.

Preferably you want a workspace that is a desk. Try to make it as free from distractions as possible. So, not in front of a TV and not in bed (see number 1). etc. Find somewhere quiet, and set it up to be as productive as possible. There’s some awesome online guides.

Get a comfy chair.

If you don’t have an office chair, find something close. Being uncomfortable for long periods will be an instant distraction. Dining room table chairs are a decent option with a thin Pillow.

Do things you normally would at work/school:

Take breaks, have a lunch hour, get that morning/afternoon coffee etc. When your day is over, your day is over.

Some people overwork when they work from home.

Make sure that when your day is over you stop. Keeping “work time”, and “personal time” defined and separate is important physically, and mentally.

Working from home is an exercise in self control.

You are your biggest enemy in this. Following the steps above will help you get into the same mindset you would in the office, but at home. You need to keep yourself focused. Do what you need to do to get into that headspace and stay there.

Hope this helps making working from home productive, and give you all a leg up on working from home. It can be an awesome thing, with the right goals.
