Lighthouse Labs Bootcamp Admissions Interview

A question our admissions team frequently gets asked is:

“Is there anything I can do to prepare for an interview?”

Truthfully, there are some things that everyone can do to feel a little more confident walking through the front door. So, here are our “Do’s n’ Don’ts” to make your Bootcamp interview a little more clear.

Learn what your life could look like after graduating from our bootcamp.

DOs:

  • Do your research. Look through our blog, FAQs, and admissions pages. Our website is loaded with a ton of info about our curriculum with a detailed syllabus for all our programs, and even some resources to help you figure out which program is for you, like Web vs. Data Science or Bootcamp vs. Intro. We’ve also got info about payment options and ideal application times, so definitely take some time to look through those resources.

  • Do come prepared with answers to possible questions (this is an interview, after all!). Think about why you want take Bootcamp, what you hope to get out of the program, or any things you want to learn about the curriculum. You can learn more about what to expect from the admissions process in this blog post. Doing your research in advance helps, as you’ll be able to get a better sense of what you’ll walk out of the program knowing, through looking at the syllabus and overview, instead of coming in not knowing anything. (See the data science bootcamp curriculum here / See the web development bootcamp curriculum here.)

  • Do ask us questions! Sometimes people don’t know what to ask and miss an awesome chance to chat with a staff or team member about the program. We always make sure that there is the opportunity for every applicant to ask those burning questions, as we value that each applicant is making an important investment in the next step for their career!

  • Do arrive on time for your interview. The standard rule goes: 5 minutes before the meeting time means you’re on time. If you’re on time, you’re 5 minutes late. Don't fret though. If you're late, let us know as soon as you can.

  • Do dress appropriately for the interview. Dress code for an interview in the tech industry is a little tough, as it’s not a three piece suit, but definitely not too casual that you can just roll out of bed. Standard business casual normally is recommended, or you can think of whatever you might wear to a casual dinner out with your parents or friends, and roll with that.

  • Do check out the prep work. Get a head start on the material you’ll need to cover before Bootcamp in our Prep Course! This will help you get a better feel for the program and potential questions you may want to ask the admissions team.

DON’T:

  • Don't underestimate the difficulty of Bootcamp. This is an intensive, immersive style of education, with everyone who is enrolled having an opportunity to be challenged and grow as a developer. Get familiar with the student experience.

  • Don't underestimate your ability to succeed either! We’ve seen countless times where people who have never looked at code before have gone on to do well in the program, and have had awesome opportunities working as a developer in the industry.

  • Don't be rigid in your planning. Cohorts fill up very quickly, and only about 30% of students get accepted into their desired cohort. Make sure to submit your application 6-8 weeks before your desired start date. Our admissions process can take one or two weeks and there is also mandatory prep work that takes up to 4 weeks which every applicant must complete a week before Bootcamp starts.

  • Don't freak out about the interview! While it is a formal process, we try to keep it as fun and engaging as possible. There are some challenging questions, and sometimes we will be firm with setting expectations, but we try to make it as much of a fun conversation as possible.

Overall, our team is looking forward to meeting people who are extremely passionate about coding and are super stoked on being a developer, so hopefully you can come in, have an awesome and fun conversation, and we can get you set up and ready to go for our life-changing Bootcamp!

It's time kickstart your new career with Lighthouse Labs.
